CASE STUDY:
Metabolic Tuning of a Competition Horse in Eventing
Despite high-quality training, an international-level competition horse in eventing was experiencing performance stagnation, muscle stiffness, and slower recovery after exercise.
An analysis of the feed ration, along with hematological and biochemical testing, revealed elevated liver enzymes without a corresponding increase in muscle markers. The results indicated limited recovery capacity and less effective replenishment of energy stores after training.
After adjusting the amino acid profile of the feed ration, changing energy sources, and optimizing the intake of magnesium, selenium, and vitamin E, there was an improvement in recovery, the horse’s willingness to work, and subsequent growth in training condition within a few weeks.
A special grain-free feed formula with a very low starch content (22 g/kg) was developed for a gelding diagnosed with PSSM1. After several months of use, there was an improvement in body condition, an increase in muscle mass, and a gradual return to light exercise.
